Excerpt from Private Dalzell, His Autobiography, Poems, and Comic War Papers, Sketch of John Gray, Washington's Last Soldier, Etc, Vol. 3I promised the public my autobiography, and here it is. The book and volume of my life is too humble a part of history to be elaborated in any detail, and I have not the vanity or egotism to do so. I was born as others are born, and shall die as others have died, and that's about all there's of it. The proper time for a man's "autobiography" to be written is when he is safe in heaven. The gentle reader will not murmur nor complain, therefore, if I cut it short in righteousness.It's all a mistake that I alone put down the rebellion.
